Mirkadim pourasabha beset with problems

Mirkadim pourasabha under sadar upazila of Munshiganj district is beset with manifold problems.

The problems include bad shape of roads, drainage system, irregularity in tax realisation.
It is alleged that there is no clarity and transparency in issuing tax notices. Tax notices are being served without the signature of the chairman of the pourasabha, it is further alleged. There is no hard and fast rule in assessing taxes too. It is learnt that a section of officials are engaged in harassing the taxpayers by issuing tax notices to taxpayers which are much higher than the normal taxes. Thus the government is losing revenue every year.

An official of the pourasabha has been serving in his position in the same place for long 15 years. On the other hand, there is no normal rule in assessing taxes. A tax payer told this correspondent that he had been paying his holding taxes at the rate of Taka 200 properly for the last few years but he became astonished when he found that his said tax had been fixed at Taka 1754 in 2006-2007 year. He met an official to reduce the rate but he was disappointed at the indication he got there. Now he is paying Taka 1,754 as tax which is nine times higher than the previous rate.

It is alleged that the water line that runs between Ziranandapatti to Nagarkashba has been constructed in a faulty manner. Had it gone through the north side road it would have been helpful for the hundreds of people. At the same time the drain constructed to the west of the Nagar Kashba Jame Mosque has failed to serve the purpose of the local people, it is alleged.

From the very beginning of establishment of this pourasabha it faced a lot of problems. Though it was established on January 1, I995 the first election was held in 2004 amidst much barriers and obstacles.
